A Town Built on the Rogue River
Rockford grew up around a dam and sawmill on the Rogue River that Smith Lapham completed in 1844 after arriving in Kent County the year before; the settlement, first called Laphamville, was platted in 1856 by William Thornton and had only about five houses by the fall of 1845.
